What Are Thermal Ribbons?

Thermal ribbons are used in thermal transfer printing to apply text and images to labels. The ribbon sits between the printhead and the label material, and heat from the printer transfers ink from the ribbon onto the label surface.

Thermal ribbons come in three main types: wax, wax-resin, and resin. Each is suited for different materials and durability needs.

Thermal ribbons are available in two configurations: coated side in (CSI) and coated side out (CSO). This refers to which side of the ribbon the ink coating is on. It's important to match the correct format with your printer to ensure proper printing.

These ribbons are compatible with a wide range of thermal printers, including Zebra, SATO, Datamax, TSC and Intermec.
